US pilots of WW2 were issued a wide variety of flight hemlets, with the materials usually corresponding to the temperature in which they were expected to be worn. Cotton flight helmets for warm weather, goatskin helmets for intermediate weather, and sheepskin for cold weather. This lot contains one of each style. This Lot of 3x US WW2 Pilot Flight Helmets: 1x Navy AN-6540-2L, 1x AAF AN-H-15, 1x AAF B-6 is in Good to Very Good condition, with moderate to heavy drying and flaking to the lacquer finish of the sheepskin helmet, such that most of the exterior is now looking as if it was left untreated and still “in the white”, all of the small metal “hooks” for attaching the oxygen mask on the leather tabs around the crown of the sheepskin helmet having been neatly removed long ago, some light darkening to the chamois lining of the goatskin helmet, and only a bit of wear evident to the cotton helmet. Most interestingly, the Navy AN-6540-2L Brown Goatskin Leather Helmet is a Size Medium, boasts the classic black rubber ear cups with chamois “donut” interior ear pads, and carries the original “AN 6540-2L / SLOTE & KLEIN” US Navy contract label on the chamois lining. The AAF AN-H-15 Khaki Cotton Helmet is also a Size Medium, also sports black rubber ear cups with chamois “donut” interior ear pads, and carries the original “SPEC. AN-H-15 / BATES SHOE CO.” AAF nomenclature label inside. The AAF B-6 Brown Sheepskin Leather Helmet is also a Size Medium, features a warm sheepskin fleece lining, and carries the original “TYPE B-6” AAF nomenclature label inside. All three helmets are complete with the original goggle retention tabs and straps around the back crowns, as well as the original chinstraps, with the Navy AN-6540-2L and AAF AN-H-15 having velour padded chinstraps. A fine Lot of 3x US WW2 Pilot Flight Helmets.
