Women also served in the US Navy during Vietnam, as nurses, clerical staff, and in other capacities to free men for combat. Navy nurses serving in Southeast Asia during “the ‘Nam” were usually stationed on hospital ships offshore, and provided vital medical care and undoubtedly a morale boost to wounded US Navy sailors and US Marines aboard. This US Navy Vietnam Nurse Corps Lieutenant Commander Badged Seersucker Service Dress Uniform is in Near Mint condition. Most interestingly, it consists of the original short sleeve seersucker blouse in Size 16 Short, seersucker skirt in Size 16 Short, and seersucker overseas cap (specially designed to compliment a woman’s coiffure) in Size 23 1/2. The blouse features a ribbon rack for the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with one “battle star”, and South Vietnamese “Republic of Vietnam” Campaign Medal at the left chest, the original gilt Navy Nurse Corps insignia at the left collar point, and the original Navy Lieutenant Commander rank insignia at the right collar point. The overseas cap is dated 1960 and hand named to “JONES, S.E.” on the original “U.S. NAVY” contract label inside, and the set is a beautiful example of a rare, original US Navy Vietnam Nurse Corps Lieutenant Commander Badged Seersucker Service Dress Uniform.
