The proper identification of British socket bayonets of the mid-19th century requires true diligence, as the slightest additional markings can determine the difference between a US Civil War import, a British Crimean War issue piece, or a myriad of other possibilities. If most of the markings are worn away, however, as on this example, and all that remains visible is the “crown” mark at the ricasso, the only fact one can ascertain is that particular socket bayonet was at one time owned by the British government. This Antique British 1850s 1860s Pattern 1853 Enfield Musket Socket Bayonet is in Good condition, with moderate overall pitting, patina, and age wear. Most interestingly, it features an approximately 17” long triangular blade, sports the original locking ring at the mortise, and carries some very difficult to decipher markings at the ricasso, with the only character actually remaining legible being the “crown”, which is a British government ownership mark. It’s complete with the original Antique British Dark Brown Leather Scabbard in Poor condition, with an almost complete tear to the lower body, and with heavy overall drying, cracking, and age wear evident. It boasts the original brass reinforced end tip and throat, the latter mounting the original brass frog stud, and the set is a fine example of a rare, original Antique British 1850s 1860s Pattern 1853 Enfield Musket Socket Bayonet.
