The rear sight is an aperture sight in a fully adjustable Lyman mount fixed to the left rear of the receiver.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is one-piece checkered walnut with a capped semi-pistol grip, straight comb, sling loops at the forend and belly, and a serrated metal buttplate. The wood shows light nicks, scuffs, and compressions, as well as some minor handling and storage marks. The checkering is sharp. The LOP measures 13.5” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock is in Fine overall condition.
Type of Finish: Blue
Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, this bore rates a 10 out of 10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 92% of its metal finish. There are a few light dustings of oxidation along the barrel and receiver, as well as some on the trigger guard. There are some light scattered nicks and handling marks throughout. The screw heads are well-defined. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in Very Good to Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle includes one original vintage Winchester blued single shot “sled magazine” in great shape, and stamped on the bottom floorplate with its maker, "MADE IN U.S.A. / WINCHESTER / TRADE MARK / PAT. NOV. 25, 1919". The presence of the patent date denotes manufacture from ca. 1938-45, meaning the mag predates the rifle by about a decade or so.
Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 75 .22 LR bolt action rifle was produced from 1938-1958, with about 88,000 being made in both “Target” and “Sporting” variations. This “Sporting” rifle features 92% of its original blued finish, a gorgeous walnut stock, and sound mechanics. This would be a great starter rifle to pass on to the next generation of shooters and collectors.
