Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 68 was introduced in 1934 as a simple, reliable, and affordable single-shot bolt-action rifle, ideal for young shooters and rural households. Based closely on the popular Model 67, the Model 68 added factory iron sights with a dovetailed front and adjustable rear, features that set it apart in the budget rifle market. This particular example is chambered in the increasingly scarce .22 W.R.F. (Winchester Rim Fire), a cartridge that falls between the .22 LR and .22 Magnum in performance and was once considered an excellent small game round. While the rifle has received a refinish and exhibits pitting, tool marks, and general signs of wear from honest use, the action remains functional and the bore is remarkably clean with a sharp 10/10 rating. Collectors of vintage rimfires will appreciate the long 27” barrel, correct checkered Winchester hard rubber buttplate, and finger-grooved stock. Though well-worn, this C&R-eligible rifle captures the essence of Winchester’s working-class utility arms of the Depression-era and wartime period.
