In the 1920s, fresh off of lucrative World War 1 military contracts, the legendary Winchester Repeating Arms Co. sought to diversify from a manufacturer of firearms and ammunition to a broad-based gun, hardware, and sporting goods operation. This Lot of 3 Antique 1920s Winchester Axes is in Good Condition, with moderate loosening to the head of the shorter half hatchet hammer, moderate cracking to the top of the wood handle of that shorter half hatchet hammer, a sizable, deep chip going almost all the way through the left side of the blue painted lower handle of the traditional ax, moderate chipping and cracking to the top of the wood handle of that traditional ax, some sharpening to the blade edges of the two pieces so far described, some patina to the heads of all three pieces, and with some scattered age wear evident. Most interestingly, the lot consists of two carpenter's half hatchet hammers and one traditional hand ax. The former boast the classic carpenter’s half hatchet blades with a nail puller in the bottom edge and a hammer head at top, sport rugged wooden handles, and are stamped at the left side of each hatchet blade with their maker, the famous “WINCHESTER / -TRADEMARK- / -MADE IN U.S.A.-”, with the shorter of the two hatchet hammers (14” long as opposed to 15”) also being marked “-SPECIAL-”. The traditional ax also features a nail puller in the bottom edge of the head, sports a rugged wooden handle with the entire lower half painted blue, and is stamped at the left side of the blade with its matching maker, “WINCHESTER / -TRADEMARK- / -MADE IN U.S.A.-”. It measures about 14 1/4” long, and the set is a fine example of a rare, original Lot of 3 Antique 1920s Winchester Axes.
