Our Assessment: The Ruger New Model Blackhawk in .44 Special is a modern take on the classic American single-action revolver, offering timeless Old West aesthetics with the strength and precision Ruger is known for. While the Blackhawk platform is commonly associated with the .357 Magnum and .45 Colt, this .44 Special variant offers a welcome blend of mild recoil, excellent accuracy, and classic big-bore charm. Produced in limited numbers, this particular configuration—with its 4 5/8” barrel and blued finish—strikes a near-perfect balance between portability, shootability, and visual appeal. This revolver, manufactured in 2009, is in excellent overall condition and appears to have seen minimal use. The metal retains approximately 98% of its blued finish with only the faintest turn line visible on the cylinder. The bore is mirror-bright with sharp rifling, rating a 9.5/10, and the factory checkered black plastic grips with Ruger medallions are equally crisp. The adjustable sights and smooth single-action trigger make this a highly accurate and user-friendly wheelgun, suitable for both range duty and field carry. The revolver is accompanied by its original factory hard case, a welcome bonus for collectors and those seeking a complete example.
Whether you're a shooter looking for a reliable and elegant .44 Special revolver or a Ruger enthusiast in search of a clean Blackhawk with desirable features, this revolver delivers. It captures the essence of the Old West in a refined modern package—rugged enough for serious use, yet refined enough for display. This New Model Blackhawk offers a superb opportunity to own a classic American sidearm chambered in a legendary cartridge.
