Action Type: Single Action Revolver with Side Loading-Gate Cylinder
Barrel Length: 4 3/4”
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a fixed blade. The rear sight is “V”-notch integral to the top strap.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are two piece checkered black hard rubber with rampant colt in oval at their tops. Each panel has some scratching in the oval with the rampant colt, possibly initials, and there is scratching on their bottom faces that also appears intentional. The grips otherwise have fairly even light handling wear. There are a few nicks, scuffs and small scratches. The checkering is generally well defined. Overall, the grips are in about Very Good condition.
Type of Finish: Blue & Case Color
Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bore is gray. The rifling is well defined. There is scattered erosion and pitting in the bore. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates about 4/10.
Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 20% of its metal finish. Remaining finish is mostly in well protected areas and around raised features. There is infrequent other scattered finish. Exposed areas have mostly gone to a light-moderate patina. There is scattered light oxidation and some minor erosion. There are some light nicks, scuffs and scratches. The action shows operational wear including a turn-line on the cylinder. The screw heads range from sharp to lightly tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this revolver is in Good condition.
Mechanics: The hammer will fall from half-cock when the trigger is pressed. Otherwise, the action functions correctly. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None
Our Assessment: The Colt Bisley was introduced in 1894 as a target pistol. The name Bisley came from the famous firing range in Bisley, England. The Colt Bisley can be distinguished by the longer grip, the wider hammer spur, and the wider trigger. These distinctive revolvers were serial-numbered in the range of 156300–331916, in the same sequence as the Single Action Army. This is an example of a 1st Gen. Bisley, made in 1904 and chambered for .38-40 Winchester with a 4 3/4” barrel. The revolver shows wear consistent with its age of more than 120 years, retaining about 20% original finish, a fair bore and good mechanics apart from the sear engagement at the half-cock notch. This will make a neat addition to a Colt or old-West revolver collection and will be a great companion gun for a lever action chambered for the same cartridge. Please see our photos and good luck!
