Our Assessment: This is a high condition example of Marlin's classic pump action rimfire, retaining approximately 95% of its original finish. The metal surfaces show strong, even finish with only light handling evidence, and the rifle presents a very clean, well preserved appearance for its age. The long 24" barrel gives the rifle a graceful sporting profile and an excellent sight radius, complementing the slim lines of the Model 27 series.
Mechanically, the rifle is outstanding. The bore rates 9 out of 10 with bright steel and sharp rifling, indicating very light use. The action functions correctly and delivers the smooth, positive pump stroke for which Marlin slide action rimfires are well known. Overall handling is balanced and deliberate, well suited for small game hunting and recreational shooting.
Historically, the Marlin 27-S represents Marlin's answer to Winchester's early pump action rimfires and is widely regarded for its robust construction and smooth operation. Chambered in .25 RF, this rifle reflects a transitional rimfire era before .22 Long Rifle became dominant. High condition examples in this chambering are increasingly scarce, and this rifle stands as a particularly strong representative of early twentieth century American rimfire craftsmanship.
