Our Assessment: This is a classic early takedown example of Winchester's first successful slide action rimfire, representing the Second Model variation with its refined internal improvements over the earliest production. The 24" barrel gives the rifle the long, graceful sporting profile that made the Model 1890 so popular in galleries, clubs, and small game use at the turn of the century. Approximately 45% of the original blue finish remains, with a balance that reflects a century of honest use. The remaining blue on the barrel, magazine tube, and receiver helps preserve the rifle's period appearance and character.
Mechanically, the rifle remains serviceable. The bore rates 4 out of 10, showing notable wear and should not be fired. The action functions correctly and retains the solid, positive pump stroke that defined Winchester's early slide action design. The takedown system operates as intended, adding practical utility and underscoring the rifle's role as a portable sporting and gallery arm in its day.
As a 1900 production Second Model 1890 takedown, this rifle stands as a historically significant piece from Winchester's formative rimfire years. It represents the foundation of Winchester's later pump action designs and remains an evocative example of early American slide action craftsmanship, valued today for its originality, mechanical integrity, and unmistakable turn of the century character.
