Lot 55Engraved Colt New Line .22 Short Rimfire Pocket Single Action Revolver

Description:

Engraved Colt New Line .22 Short Rimfire Pocket Single Action Revolver

Our Assessment: This a Colt New Line .22 Revolver, made in 1876. The revolver is particularly interesting as it has factory engraving and a legible etched-panel on the barrel. About 16,000 1st Model pistols were made between 1873 and early 1876, with over 39,000 of the 2nd Models produced in 1876 and 1877. Colt stopped producing these cute little pocket pistols due to overwhelming competition from cheaply made "suicide specials". This revolver will be a nice find for collectors of early Colt revolvers.

Make: Colt

Model: New Line

Serial Number: 14379

Year of Manufacture: 1876

Caliber: .22 Short, Black Powder

Action Type: Single Action Revolver

Barrel Length: 2 1/4"

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade fixed to the barrel. The rear sight is a "U"-notch integral to the topstrap.

Grip Configuration & Condition: The grips are two-piece smooth bone panels. The grips have minor cracking at the screw escutcheons. There is minor loss at the top of the right panel. There are some scattered minor marks and spots of discoloration. The grips rate in about Very Good overall condition as ANTIQUE.

Type of Finish: Nickel & Silver-Plated Brass

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is dark. The rifling is worn, but visible. There is scattered erosion and pitting in the bore. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates 4 out of 10.

Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 48% of its metal finish. The barrel retains much of its nickel finish. The cylinder has mostly worn to white with finish remaining in the flutes. There are scattered spots of silver on the brass frame. There are scattered light nicks, scuffs and scratches. There is some light surface oxidation. The screw heads are tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear including the etched-panel on the barrel. Overall, this handgun rates in about Fine condition as ANTIQUE.

Mechanics: The cylinder can be pushed out of lock fairly easily. Otherwise, the action functions correctly. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a more thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
