Our Assessment: The Auto-Ordnance “Defending Freedom” Commemorative Thompson is a striking tribute to one of America’s most iconic battlefield arms—the M1A1 Thompson submachine gun. This semi-automatic carbine faithfully replicates the look and feel of the original WWII Thompson while celebrating American patriotism through its highly embellished presentation. Featuring a 16.5” finned barrel (extended to 18.75” with the classic Cutts compensator), the rifle is finished in a lavish mix of 24-karat gold, bright nickel, and deep bluing, with ornate patriotic scrollwork and eagles etched into the receiver. Limited to just 500 rifles, this example is number 315 and comes with a fitted hard case and nickel-plated 20-round magazine. The oversized fixed walnut stock and classic foregrip lend it the unmistakable Thompson profile—equal parts battlefield brawler and collector centerpiece.
This example remains in Excellent condition, retaining 99% of its finish with only a few light scuffs on the wood furniture. The bore is bright, the rifling is sharp, and the mechanics are fully functional. As a commemorative, it appears unfired outside of factory testing making it a standout display piece. Whether you’re a collector of historical firearms, military memorabilia, or limited-edition commemoratives, the Defending Freedom Thompson combines iconic American heritage with luxurious presentation.
