Overall, the stock is in Very Good condition as refinished.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 35% of its metal finish. Strongest finish is on the barrel/receiver over the stock. Forward of the forend, there is more extensive finish wear. The guard is mostly worn to white. Some worn areas are going to a patina. There are scattered nicks, scuffs, scratches and light surface oxidation. The action shows operational wear. The screw head range from sharp to tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 1904 was part of a series of rifles based on John Browning's August 29, 1899 patent which was purchased by Winchester Repeating Arms Company. The Model 1904 was introduced in said year and remained on the market until 1931 with several variations during this period. The original 1904s were marked as the "MOD. 1904" on their barrels until April of 1919 when they were redesignated as the Model "04" (this gun is one of the pre-1919 specimens). The Semi-crescent stock would remain in use until 1925 and the gun was finally retired in 1931. The rifles are simple and reliable, especially safe for training new shooters with their manually-cocked single-shot action.
This gun has the charm of an early production Model 1904 including a nicely crafted stock with schnabel forend and crescent buttplate. The gun has wear consistent with a "boy's rifle" made well over 100 years ago, but it remains mechanically sound and retains its charming aesthetic. This is a great option for Winchester collectors and fans of old plinkers. Please see our photos and good luck!
