Year of Manufacture: 1940 / ATF Classification: C&R
Caliber/Gauge: .22 Short, Long, & Long Rifle
Action Type: Pump-Action (Slide-Action), Tubular Magazine
Barrel Length: 23"
Sights/Optics: The front sight is a beaded post dovetailed into the barrel. The rear sight is an adjustable elevation u-notch dovetailed into the barrel. The receiver tang is drilled, tapped, and filled for a tang sight. The fill screw is not flush to the tang.
Grip/Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is wood with a straight comb, straight-wrist grip, longer 17 rib type forend, and a checkered hard-rubber Winchester buttplate. The buttplate shows light wear mainly around the edges. The furniture shows light wear with some scattered pressure dings and surface scuffs. The LOP measures 13.25" from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. There are no chips or cracks. This furniture rates in Very Good condition.
Type of Finish: Blued
Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bore is mostly-bright and the rifling is sharp with stubborn fouling. There is faint erosion in the bore towards the muzzle. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates 8.5/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its metal finish. There is finish loss on the magazine tube and barrel from operation. The receiver shows light scratches and minor freckling. The bolt shows operational wear and thinning on top. The barrel is mostly unblemished aside from a few small scratches. The screw head that would be used for mounting a peep sight shows heavy tooling. Care should be taken if turning this screw. The rest of the screw heads are lightly tooled and retain strong slots. The markings are clear and complete. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this firearm. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None
Our Assessment: This is a high condition pre war example of Winchester's iconic slide action rimfire. Approximately 95% of the original blue finish remains, with the metal surfaces showing strong, even color and only light handling wear. The rifle retains matching numbered parts, which adds meaningful collector appeal. The stock and forend present clean lines and finish consistent with careful use and long term preservation, giving the rifle a very nice overall appearance.
Mechanically, the rifle is equally strong. The bore rates 8.5 out of 10 with good brightness and clearly defined rifling. The action functions correctly and exhibits the smooth, positive pump stroke that made the Model 62A one of Winchester's most respected and longest running rimfire designs. The 23" barrel provides a balanced sporting profile and an excellent sight radius, contributing to the rifle's natural pointability.
As a 1940 production Model 62A with very strong remaining finish, matching numbers, a good bore, and correct mechanical function, this rifle stands as a desirable example from the peak of Winchester's pre World War II rimfire craftsmanship.
